How to prove your identity if you’re claiming for the first time.

If you want to claim a payment, you need a Centrelink Customer Reference Number (CRN). To get a CRN you need to prove who you are with us first. You can do this either online or over the phone.

At a later date, we’ll need more identity documents from you to complete our identity requirements. We’ll contact you to let you know what we need.

What happens if you have an authorised nominee

If you have a nominee dealing with us on your behalf, they can contact us to prove who you are. If we can verify your nominee over the phone, we’ll accept your identity details from them.

When you need to prove your partner's identity

Your partner also needs to prove their identity with us, if you're claiming:

They can do this over the phone. At a later date, we may need more identity documents from them to complete our identity requirements. We’ll contact them in the future to let them know what we need.

We may have already completed our identity requirements if your partner either:

  • gets a payment from us
  • has received a payment from us before.
