Documents you need to provide
There are important documents you need to give us to provide an assurance of support.
We’ll need a copy of the visa applicant’s assuree letter from the Department of Home Affairs. The letter will say the visa applicant must have an assurance of support.
If you’ll be the only assurer, or you’re giving a joint assurance, you can apply online.
If you’re an organisation you can’t apply online. You need to apply by completing a form.
If you’re applying under the Community Support Program, use the Application to provide an Assurance of support for Community Support Program form.
If you’re not applying under the Community Support Program, use the Application to provide an Assurance of Support form.
Important tax documents to prove your income
You can apply as an individual or on behalf of an organisation. Either way, you’ll need your or your organisations Taxation Notice of Assessment. The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) issues this when they assess your income after you lodge a tax return.
We can accept a notice of assessment up to 2 years old. But you’ll also need to give us proof of your income for the past financial year. Keep in mind, for individuals we can’t accept a tax return as proof of income.
For organisations, we can accept a tax return as proof of trading for one of the past 2 financial years. We need this with the previous year’s Taxation Notice of Assessment if you can’t give us a recent one.
Documents individuals need
If you’re applying as an individual, you’ll also need to give us all of the following:
- proof of your identity
- your Customer Reference Number (CRN), if you have one
- proof of your Australian residence status
- proof you have a job or ongoing income.
To prove your Australian residence status you can give us a copy of either your:
- Australian citizenship
- permanent residency.
To prove you have a job or ongoing income you can give us either:
- 2 recent consecutive payslips for the current financial year
- a letter from your employer
- Taxation Notice of Assessment for one of the past 2 financial years.
If you’re self employed, you must give us a profit and loss statement for the current financial year. If you can’t, you can give us a letter from your accountant. You must also have your Taxation Notice of Assessment for the last financial year from the ATO.
Documents organisations need
If you’re an incorporated organisation you need to give us proof you’re on the Australian Business Register website.
If you’re an unincorporated organisation you need to give us proof detailing the names of all members of the organisation. We’ll also need a copy of the constitution, if it has one.
You also need to give us all of the following:
- proof of identity documents for the person applying on behalf of the organisation
- proof the authorised person can sign on behalf of the organisation
- proof your organisation has an address in Australia, this can be an active Australian Business Number
- proof of 2 years recent trading history for your organisation, a tax return or a letter from a registered accountant
- proof showing the organisation has the income capacity to support those people the assurance of support covers.
To finalise most applications, we’ll ask you to arrange a bank guarantee and term deposit.
You must do this with the Commonwealth Bank of Australia. After you submit your application, we’ll write to you and let you know if you need to do this. The letter will let you know all of the following details:
- how much money you must deposit for the bank guarantee
- how long the bank guarantee is for
- names of the people the assurance of support covers
- when you must complete the bank guarantee and submit the documents by.
Once you arrange the bank guarantee, the bank will issue you a copy of it. They will also issue you with a statement confirming your account for the term deposit. You’ll need to give these documents to us with the letter requesting you to complete the bank guarantee. After we have these documents, we’ll let you know the final result of your application.
As an individual
The bank guarantee and term deposit must be in the name of the person applying. If multiple people are applying, you can list all the people applying on the bank guarantee and term deposit account.
Keep in mind, you can’t include anyone other than the people applying to provide support. This means you can’t include a partner or sibling, unless they’re applying to provide support. The bank guarantee and term deposit account must include only the names of people applying to provide support.
As an organisation
If an organisation is applying, the bank guarantee and term deposit must be in the name of the organisation. It must not be in the name of the person applying on behalf of the organisation.
