The amount of ABSTUDY you get depends on your situation.

The amount of ABSTUDY you will be paid depends on all of the following:

You should only submit your claim for ABSTUDY if you meet the general eligibility criteria and the eligibility criteria for an award. We will then determine the correct ABSTUDY allowance and payment rate.

Living Allowance maximum rates

You may get ABSTUDY Living Allowance if you are eligible for the Schooling B, Tertiary or Masters and Doctorate awards. These payment rates are only a guide. They are for full time students and apprentices. Use our online estimators to work out how much you might get.

We update the rates each year on 1 January for people younger than 22 and 20 March and 20 September for people 22 or older.

Incidentals Allowance payments depending on the length of course

The maximum amount of Incidentals Allowance you can get depends on the length of the course. This applies to Schooling B, Tertiary, Part time or Masters and Doctorate students. Find the maximum payment you would get for your course.

Additional Incidentals payments depending on the length of course

Additional Incidentals applies to Tertiary, Masters and Doctorate students. To get Additional Incidentals, you have to spent the full amount of Incidentals Allowance and have further essential course costs. The Additional Incidentals Allowance is only payable where these costs must be incurred by all students in the course.

The essential course costs must be more than these amounts added together :

  • the amount of Incidental Allowance we already paid you
  • the maximum payment of Additional Incidental allowance you may get depending on the length of your course.

You will have to fill out the ABSTUDY Additional Incidental claim form and provide receipts showing your essential course costs.

The maximum amount of Additional Incidentals payments you can get depends on the length of the course you do. This applies to Tertiary, Masters and Doctorate students. Find the maximum payment you would get for your course.
