Your child’s payment may stop if we don’t know your income

If your child’s Youth Allowance or ABSTUDY payment has stopped, here’s why it may have stopped and what you need to do.

Why your child’s payment may have stopped

If your child’s payment has stopped this may be because we need your income details. Your child may have got a letter from us about your income in late September or early October 2019. If we didn’t get your income details we may have stopped your child’s payment.

We review your income each year to make sure your dependent child is still eligible for their payment. We also check that we’re paying them the right amount. We call this the Annual parental income reassessment.

What you need to do

Follow the instructions in your child’s letter to give us your income information. You’ll need to do this for each child who gets a letter.

If we suspended your child’s payment, we’ll automatically restore it if we get your income details in under 13 weeks.

We may cancel your child’s payment if you don’t give us these details by 13 weeks after we suspended it.

If we cancel your child’s payment, you must tell us your income within 13 weeks of when we cancel it. If you don’t, your child will have to reapply for their payment and won’t get back paid.

If you don’t give us these details in time your child may also get a debt. They may have to pay back their Student Start-up Loan or the Relocation Scholarship if they got them. If we paid your child’s payment to you, you’ll be responsible for paying back any debts.

If your child gets ABSTUDY we need your income details by 31 December or their payment will stop.

If your child didn’t get a letter about your income, we don’t need your income information. We already have the information we need.

When you need more time to tell us your income

You may be able to give us an income estimate if you don’t know your income yet.

You may be able to get more time to give us your income details. You must have a good reason why you need more time. You’ll need to contact us on your child’s payment phone number to talk about this.
