Your child care service may choose to waive the gap fee

28 September 2021

This may apply to you if you get Child Care Subsidy and you’re in a Coronavirus (COVID-19) hotspot area.

The gap fee is the out of pocket amount you pay once your Child Care Subsidy is applied.

It’s up to your child care service to waive the gap fee.

Your child care service may choose to waive your gap fee if either of these apply to you:

  • the service is in a Commonwealth declared COVID-19 hotspot for more than 7 days
  • you live in an area that has been a Commonwealth declared COVID-19 hotspot for more than 7 days.

Your child care service may also choose to waive gap fees if they’re temporarily closed due to public health advice.

They can also waive gap fees for other reasons and for earlier dates, depending on the state or territory you live in. This can include if your child care service has limited their availability, and are only allowing the following to attend care:

  • children of essential workers
  • children whose parents can’t work from home
  • children who are vulnerable or disadvantaged.

Talk to your child care service to see if any of these apply to you.

If you have a Centrepay deduction set up

Do you pay your fees through Centrepay? If your child care service is waiving the gap fee, remember to suspend or cancel the payments for this period.
