Why Disability Support Pension is the right payment for you
1 April 2020
If you’re already getting Disability Support Pension, find out what the impacts will be if you claim JobSeeker Payment.
You may be thinking about giving up your Disability Support Pension (DSP) to claim the JobSeeker Payment (JSP).
Before you decide to give up your DSP, make sure it’s the best option for you.
Disability Support Pension
DSP provides financial help if you’re between 16 and Age Pension age and have one of these permanent conditions that stop you from working:
- a physical condition
- an intellectual condition
- a psychiatric condition.
DSP is a more suitable payment if:
- you have a long term disability or medical condition
- you’re unable to work 15 hours or more per week in the next 2 years.
You will keep your Pensioner Concession Card.
If you stay on DSP, you’ll get a:
- $750 Economic Support Payment payment now
- $750 Economic Support Payment payment in mid-July.
If you cancel your DSP and want to claim it again, there are some things you should know.
DSP eligibility rules have changed and may not be the same as when you first claimed it.
If you get JobSeeker Payment, you may not be able to get DSP when you claim again.
To claim DSP again, you’ll need to:
- submit a new and complete DSP claim and provide recent medical evidence from your treating health professionals
- attend any assessments, if required, including a Job Capacity Assessment and Disability Medical Assessment.
In some cases, you may need to have actively participated in a Program of Support before you can get DSP.
Not everyone with disability or a medical condition can get DSP.
The JobSeeker Payment provides financial help if you’re between 22 and Age Pension age and looking for work. It’s also for when you’re sick, or injured and can’t do your usual work or study for a short time.
You may be thinking about claiming JobSeeker Payment to get the temporary Coronavirus Supplement.
If you claim JobSeeker Payment, you’ll need to:
You need to consider how you’ll meet these requirements with a permanent disability or medical condition.
If you claim JobSeeker Payment, you’ll lose your eligibility for DSP.
You may also lose your Pensioner Concession Card.
