We’ve extended the pause on debt activity to 30 October 2020
30 September 2020
In response to COVID-19, we paused some debt raising and recovery activity to help ease pressure on people’s budgets.
The initial 6 month pause on debt activity has been extended to 30 October 2020. The pause will be assessed on a monthly basis.
During the pause, we won’t raise new overpayments or ask you to pay money back.
Debt activity related to serious non-compliance or fraud will continue during the pause.
If you were repaying money before the pause
Your debt repayments will continue if you already have a payment arrangement set up. But if your situation has changed, you can update or temporarily stop your arrangement. To do this, call us on the Centrelink debt line.
If we notice you’ve been overpaid
After the pause ends, we’ll let you know if you’ve been overpaid and need to repay money. When this happens, we’ll be there to help. We’ll let you know your options and find the best one to suit you.
If you want us to raise or recover a debt during the pause
We want to help you manage your personal situation and finances in the best way for you.
We understand, during the pause, you may want to:
- be told if you’ve been overpaid and by how much
- understand why you were overpaid
- know what your options are
- start repaying money now.
If you think you’ve been overpaid and want information now, please call your regular payment line. If you have a debt, you can choose to start repaying money now.
Tell us if you have a change in your circumstances. The best way to avoid being overpaid is updating your details as soon as they change.
