We’re starting to balance family payments for 2019-20

1 July 2020

Before we can balance your Family Tax Benefit (FTB) and Child Care Subsidy (CCS), you may need to confirm your income.

We start balancing:

  • Family Tax Benefit from July
  • Child Care Subsidy from August.

Exactly when we balance your payments and what you need to do depends on your circumstances.

What you need to do

Most families will need to confirm their income with us to start the balancing process. You don’t need to call or visit us to do this.

To confirm your income, you need to either:

  • lodge a tax return with the Australian Taxation Office
  • tell us if you don’t need to lodge a tax return.

If you have a partner, they also need to lodge their tax return.

If you or your partner don’t need to lodge a tax return, you need to let us know. You can tell us using either your:

You may not need to confirm your income for your FTB to be balanced. This is if all of the following apply to you for the whole 2019-20 financial year:

  • you were single
  • you got an income support payment
  • your income support payment was not $0 for any fortnight due to your earnings.

How to keep track of your balancing

Once we’ve balanced your payments, we’ll let you know in your Express Plus Centrelink mobile app and in writing. You’ll get a letter in your myGov inbox or the post, depending on how you get letters from us.

Please don’t call or visit us to check on the progress of this. You can keep track in your Centrelink online account through myGov or the app.

What the debt pause during coronavirus means

If we think we’ve paid you too much during the year, we won’t finalise balancing your payments straightaway. This is because we’ve paused some debt activities due to the coronavirus pandemic.

If your balancing is paused, you don’t need to do anything. We’ll finish balancing your payments and write to you once the pause has ended.
