10 February 2020

Just because uni won’t start for a while, doesn’t mean you can’t prepare your student payment claim now.

January is an exciting time. Most people have finished their holidays and course offers start going out for future uni students.

You can claim 13 weeks before your course or Australian Apprenticeship begins.

Here are our top tips for claiming a student payment. These are the types of steps you’ll need to go through.

Claim early

You can submit your claim for Youth Allowance, ABSTUDY or Austudy up to 13 weeks before you start study.

Check your eligibility

First, find out if you can get it before you claim. Use our online Payment and Service Finder.

Confirm your identity

Confirm your identity with us before you start your claim. This means showing us your photo ID in 1 of our service centres.

Get a tax file number

You’ll need a tax file number. If you don’t have 1, apply on the Australian Taxation Office website.

Create an online account

Register for a Centrelink online account through myGov and keep track of your claim online.
