Pension Bonus Scheme work test changes
22 March 2021
You or your partner may be exempt from the Pension Bonus Scheme work test because of coronavirus (COVID-19).
If your work stopped between 30 March 2020 and 31 March 2021, it’s likely you won’t pass the work test. Read the full rules for the work test. You or your partner may now be exempt from passing it because of COVID-19.
On 24 December 2020 there was a change to the Pension Bonus Scheme work test rules because of COVID-19. These rules also apply to the Pension Bonus Bereavement Payment. This change means if you or your partner couldn’t work because of COVID-19, you might be exempt from passing the work test.
We can then consider you a non-accruing member of the scheme during this time. This means during this period you won’t:
- accrue bonus periods
- need to pass the work test.
If you’re 75 or over you can’t accrue bonus periods. But you won’t need to pass the work test during this period either.
Call us on the Older Australians line if you could not work because of COVID-19 and any of the following applies:
- you claimed Age Pension but not the Pension Bonus payment
- we rejected your claim for Pension Bonus payment or Pension Bonus Bereavement Payment from 30 March 2020
- you withdrew your membership in the Pension Bonus Scheme because of COVID-19.
