New ways to get Youth Allowance or ABSTUDY as an independent
14 December 2020
There are now more ways to become independent through work.
There are 2 changes to criteria for people who want to claim Youth Allowance or ABSTUDY as independent through work.
From 1 January, we’ll count the 6 month period between 25 March 2020 and 24 September 2020 as part of your time spent working. You’ll automatically meet the independence through work criteria for this period, even if you weren’t working. This is because we know coronavirus (COVID-19) made work harder in 2020.
This is for all students, apprentices and job seekers claiming Youth Allowance or ABSTUDY.
Seasonal agricultural work
You can now also get Youth Allowance or ABSTUDY as an independent if you earn $15,000 through agricultural work. If you do agricultural work you might become independent faster.
You’ll need to earn this money doing approved agricultural work between 30 November 2020 and 31 December 2021. Your parents’ or guardians’ combined income also needs to be less than $160,000 per year. There’s an extra $10,000 added to the parental income limit for each of your eligible siblings.
Students can claim as independent through work this way from 1 March 2021.
