More help for farmers

2 December 2019

Farming families now have better access to Farm Household Allowance (FHA).

Farmers can get FHA for 4 years in specific 10 year periods.

Farmers who’ve already used up their 4 years can claim FHA again from 1 July 2024.

Eligible farmers can then get FHA for up to 4 years in each 10-year period.

The first 3 periods are:

  • 1 July 2014 to 30 June 2024
  • 1 July 2024 to 30 June 2034
  • 1 July 2034 to 30 June 2044.

We count 4 years as a total of 1,460 days. Farmers don’t have to use these 4 years all at once. They can save it for when they need it

Farmers and their partners who reach maximum time on FHA before 1 July 2020 will get an extra relief payment.

Single farmers will get $7,500 and each member of a couple will get $6,500, if they are eligible.

Eligible farmers will get the relief payment automatically. They don’t have to apply for it.

They started getting the payment from 16 December 2019.

More changes will start in 2020.

The assets test will be simpler. Farm and non-farm assets will be combined under a single $5.5 million limit.
