If you haven’t got the Student Start-up Loan and you need it, apply now
24 July 2020
If you’re getting a Centrelink student payment, you can now apply for the second Student Start-up Loan this year.
You can apply for the $1,094 Student Start-up Loan to help with expenses while you study. You can get it twice a year. First in semester 1, between January and June and then in semester 2, between July and December. But you must be a higher education student getting one of these payments:
- Youth Allowance
- ABSTUDY Living Allowance.
This is a loan, so you’ll need to pay it back when you reach the repayment threshold. You can find out about repayment thresholds on the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) website.
When you apply, you can also apply for one or more future Student Start-up Loans while you study. This means we’ll pay them in future semesters without you having to do anything. You can go online and change your mind at any time as long as the loan has not been paid.
If there’s no option for you to apply online it might mean you’re not doing an eligible course. Usually you need to be studying at a university or another higher education provider. You can’t get the loan for Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses.
Check if you already applied
You may have applied for the loan when you submitted your claim for Youth Allowance, Austudy or ABSTUDY Living Allowance.
If you did, we’ll pay the semester 2 loan amount with your regular Centrelink student payment in early July.
It will show in the Payment History section of your Centrelink online account if we did.
Read more news for students and trainees and subscribe to get regular news highlights from us.
We need your parents’ income by the date in your letter or we may suspend your payment.
Contact the VET Student Loans Ombudsman before 31 December 2020 to see if you need to pay it back.
