Did you get a letter asking for your parents’ income information?

11 September 2020

We need this information from your parents by the due date in the letter to make sure you get paid correctly.

You may get a letter asking for your parents’ income details this September. You may get this letter if you’re dependent and get one of the following payments:

  • Youth Allowance as a student
  • Youth Allowance as job seeker
  • Youth Allowance as an Australian Apprentice
  • ABSTUDY Living Allowance
  • ABSTUDY School Fees Allowance.

If we ask for this information, it’s important we get a response by the due date in your letter.

If you don’t get a letter, don’t worry, you don’t need to do anything. We already have all the details we need.

Why we need this information

We review your parents’ income each year. We do this to make sure you’re still eligible for your payment and we’re still paying you the right amount.

How to give this information to us

Ask your parents to follow the instructions in your letter. They need to go online to complete the income reassessment. This is the easiest way to give us the information.

Your parents can also read our guide for updating parental income details.

What happens if you don’t

If we don’t get your parents’ income details by the due date in your letter, we’ll stop your payment.

If you get ABSTUDY your parents need to tell us their income by 31 December 2020. If they don’t we may reduce your ABSTUDY to zero.

If we stop your payment, your parents can still update their income details online. After they do this, we’ll restart your payment with back pay if you’re still eligible.
