The work test to get Parental Leave Pay and Dad and Partner Pay has changed.

What the changes are

There are 2 changes to the work test.

The gap allowed between each work day in the work test period has increased from 8 to 12 weeks.

There is also a new Dangerous Jobs provision for birth mothers claiming Parental Leave Pay.

Who the changes affect

These changes will only apply to you if your child’s birth or adoption is on or after 1 January 2020.

If their birth or adoption was before this date, you’ll need to meet the work requirements before the changes.

You can read some examples to help you apply the work test.

If we rejected your pre-birth claim because you didn’t meet the work test, you may be able to claim again. You can do this if all the following apply:

  • your child’s expected date of birth or adoption was before 1 January 2020 in your pre-birth claim
  • your child’s actual birth or adoption date is on or after 1 January 2020
  • you think you’ll meet the requirements of the work test from 1 January 2020.
