How much you can get

How much you get depends on your circumstances.

New Zealand Disaster Recovery Allowance

If you’re eligible, you’ll get the maximum equivalent rate of JobSeeker Payment or Youth Allowance, depending on your personal circumstances. If your income is more than the average Australian weekly income amount of $1,737.10, we’ll reduce your payment to zero.

Disaster Recovery Allowance (DRA) Top-up

The Top-up payment is $350 each week for up to 13 weeks.

Paying tax on Disaster Recovery Allowance

Both NZ DRA and the Top-up are taxable payments. They won’t show on your Centrelink payment summary or pre-fill in your income tax return. You must manually include the amounts you got for the financial year in your income tax return.

How to declare New Zealand DRA

If you lodge online using myTax, declare it under Australian Government special payments.

If you lodge by paper, declare it in question 24 in Other income.

If you use a registered tax agent to lodge, ask them to include it in your tax return.

How to declare DRA Top-up

If you lodge online using myTax, declare it under Australian Government special payments.

If you lodge by paper, declare it in question 24 in Other income.

If you use a registered tax agent to lodge, ask them to include it in your tax return.

If you get NZ DRA you might be able to get the Beneficiary Tax Offset. This may reduce the amount of tax you pay. Read more about the Beneficiary Tax Offset on the Australian Taxation Office website.
