Health professionals applying for Medicare provider numbers (MPNs)

We’re experiencing a peak in MPN applications. Make sure you get your MPN application in on time to avoid any delays.

Processing your MPN application can take up to 6 weeks. From December to April, we experience a peak in MPN applications to process.

If you’re a Medical intern

If you’ve registered as an intern with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulatory Agency (Ahpra), you’ll get an invitation from us to finalise your MPN application using Health Professional Online Services (HPOS).

If you’re a Medical Practitioner applying for a subsequent MPN

More providers are now eligible to create subsequent MPNs using Health Professional Online Services (HPOS).

This allows:

  • Temporary Resident doctors to create additional MPNs for referring and requesting
  • Australian Citizen and Permanent Resident doctors to create additional MPNs for referring, requesting and assisting at private operations.

If you’re a Health Professional applying for a MPN

You’ll need to apply for your first MPN using a form.

If you already have a MPN

If you need to apply for an additional MPN, you may be eligible to do this online through Health Professional Online Services (HPOS). You can also update your contact and bank account details using HPOS.
