Fitzroy Crossing Service Centre in the Kimberley, Western Australia is tailored to meet the cultural needs of the local community. The unique design is respectful of local cultural requirements and includes many elements reflecting cultural aspects and Indigenous arts.
Acting General Manager Bianca Ruut said she’s extremely proud of the Fitzroy Crossing Service Centre and everyone involved in the community engagement, and in the design and build.
‘It’s a true example of commitment to community and service,’ Bianca said.
‘Community representatives, customers and local staff all worked together to ensure the site and the services we offer are respectful of local needs.’
The service centre has a special place in the hearts of the community for more than its design. Flooding, which devastated communities in the region in January 2023, inundated the building just 2 months after opening.
‘After a second refit, the service centre re-opened to much excitement from the community in October,’ Bianca said.
‘Everyone appreciated the local efforts to maintain service during the flooding and the rebuilding of the service centre.’
In November 2023, the Institute of Public Administration Australia (IPAA) ACT presented us with a Spirit of Service Award for our approach to community engagement for the project.
The IPAA recognised many features and physical design elements, including a map showing the Fitzroy Valley’s 5 local language groups.
