Changes to Medical Benefits Schedule (MBS) items from 1 January 2022

From 1 January, there’ll be changes to MBS items for Telehealth, COVID-19, Bulk Billing Incentives, Surgery and other items.

These changes are a result of the MBS Review Taskforce recommendations and extensive consultation with key stakeholders.

The changes will:

  • ensure services are clinically appropriate
  • reflect modern clinical practice
  • improve quality of care and safety for patients
  • increase access to services.

Summary of what’s changing:

  • Telehealth items - 2 new, 17 amended, 128 ended
  • COVID-19 Pathology items - 2 amended, 1 ended
  • COVID-19 Vaccine Suitability Assessment items - 2 new, 1 amended
  • Surgical Operations items - 12 amended
  • Diagnostic Imaging items - 1 new
  • Pathology items - 1 amended
  • Rural Bulk Billing Incentives items - 12 new, 4 amended.
